Ploughing in Achray Forest

Photograph courtesy of David Paterson, Edinburgh.

Photograph of Cuthbertson F type square frame single furrow plough on a BTD6? working among rank heather in Achray Forest with Ben Ledi in the background.

At this time in West Scotland Conservancy the practice was to hand cut turves from the widely spaced plough furrows and spread them between the furrows for planting on. The trench formed by the plough becoming the drainage system.

Can anyone confirm the tractor type and name the driver?

Comments

This is a Cat D2 tractor. It is probably the same tractor and driver that was involved in a fatal accident in 1955 (or 1956). It had been working near the Aberfolyle slate quarry close to where the photo was taken. The driver was instructed to bring the tractor back to Aberfoyle along the disused tramway between the slate quarry and Cammbell's limestone quarry. Unfortunately above where the David Marshal Lodge is now, a culvert gave way causing he tractor to tumble killing the driver.
