Forestry Students and friends at Darnaway ?
Photograph is part of Bill Stoddart’s collection of images taken when he was a lecturer at several Forester Training Schools. The photographs were handed in by his daughter Lilian Allan at the Forestry Memories drop in day at Huntly on 11 June 2010.
This photograph (one of a series of three 635-637) must have been taken within the same year as the previous two images from Benmore because many of the same students are present. Of interest, apart from from the fact that ladies are present, is to see Harry Watson, the Head of Benmore FTS, sitting in the front row.
There is a brief note ‘Darnaway’ against one of the photographs and it is possible that this group of students (ex services?) could have been on a 6 or 12 week course at the Estate to prepare them for Forestry School or as Forestry Foremen. Lilian believes this would have been her father’s first time as an instructor and following which he was posted to Glentress in Autumn 1946. She also thinks that Harry Watson would have been a mentor for the training course at Darnaway. It is possible that this is the celebratory gathering after the end of the course to which wives had been invited following which the staff and students would have dispersed to Forester Training Schools or to Forests as Foremen?

Does anyone have more information on the Darnaway Courses and on the Birnam Forestry School 1919- 1921 at which Harry Watson was an instructor?
Any help would be very welcome to identify the people, confirm the location and fix the year.
