Forestry Students at Benmore with Bill Stoddart
Photograph is part of Bill Stoddart’s collection of images taken when he was a lecturer at several Forester Training Schools. The photographs were handed in by his daughter Lilian Allan at the Forestry Memories drop in day at Huntly on 11 June 2010.
This particular photograph has been taken at Benmore with its distinctive windows and is one of a series of three (635 – 637) featuring many of the same students but in two different locations. Lilian Allan remembers her father going away on exchanges courses for quite long periods at a time and the photographs are from one of these periods. There is a brief note ‘Darnaway’ against one of the photographs and it is possible that this group of students (ex services?) could have been on a 6 or 12 week course at the Estate to prepare them for Forestry School. Lilian believes this would have been her father’s first time as an instructor and following which he was posted to Glentress in Autumn 1946. She also thinks that Harry Watson, the head of Benmore Forestry School would have been a mentor for the training course at Darnaway.
