Isobel Thain - Timber Corps
This photograph is courtesy of John Baillie, Garmouth who obtained the photographs from Isobel’s daughter. Note the crossed axe badge on the shoulder and in the large version photograph her Timber Corps uniform.
Isobel Thain lived at the Hill of Maud, Buckie (her father was in the merchant Navy) and she would have started her stint in the Timber Corps with the Home Grown Timber Production Department at the Hill of Maud and then about 1943, moved to Green Hill where she stayed in the camp at Heathcote, Bogmuchles. Later she was transferred to Oathillock men's camp at Deskford where she worked in the kitchen and looked after the men’s huts. The cookhouse was separate from the men's accommodation and she had her own room next to the kitchen. About 1944 she moved to Dallas camps where she did a similar cooking and house keeping job. Because the men and women's camps were close together here, Isobel was assisted by Mrs Mchardy who is in one of the group photographs.
Early 1946 she left the forestry and went on the buses as a clippie, married name was Wilson and latterly lived in Newburgh near Ellon.
