Cone collecting - The tree-net
Used especially for small-coned species, once set up the tree-net was a time effective method of collecting on trees with long crowns. The picker can use both hands, necessary for small cones. Two can pick at once, while wto remain on the ground.
It was triangular in shape, 34 feet across the base and 38 feet base to apex, with a 12 inch mesh. It used the same kind of belts and strops as the Tree-bicycle.
Photo from Forestry Commission: Forest Record No 39. “Collection of Cones from Standing Trees” by D.T. Seal, B.Sc., published 1959. Lent by kind permission of the author.
Does anyone remember using this system to gather cones? Was it used according to the safety instructions? Was it a productive method?
