Afternoon tour in Cowal area
The document is courtesy of Glenbranter Forest office staff with particular thanks to Ian Adams who has stored these old files for many years.
No information on who the tour notes were prepared for but quite a bit of emphasis on the agricultural ventures in the area as well as harvesting volumes from certain forest stands.
Very brief mentions of Benmore Forest and its history, Loch Eck Forest Office and Hostel and then a bus stop to view the sheep down falls in the forest design leading to sheep fanks at the bottom from the grazings on the tops. Glenbranter Forester’s house and office is mentioned but more emphasis on the Forest Worker Holdings on the former farm of Ballemeanoch and the complete unit of Invernoaden Farm.
There must have been a stop at two forest compartments to look at the tree growth growth rates and potential total volume production and interestingly the statistics are also quoted in metric components. There after the guide very briefly mentions a pit prop depot, the Cowal Ari Sawmill and then the recent house building and school extension works in Strachur before some more detail as they enter and pass through Hell’s Glen to Ardgoil and Glenmore.
