Much history is attached to this little letter and so much unknown. Miss E J McDowall was to travel to KingsHouse Station (on Strathyre to Lochearnhead road) where she would be met by someone to take her to her accommodation bothy in Tulloch Forest.
Note that her wages at age 17 was 35/- per week from which deductions a total of 3/- for rent and contribution to the cook’s wages. Uniform consisted of ‘breeches, pullover, two pairs of dungarees, two pair of stockings, a pair of ankle boots, oilskin and sou’wester’.
Most Timber Corps ladies had six weeks training at Shandford Lodge near Brechin prior to being posted to a forest location and assume they were issued with some parts of the uniform at that point.
Can anyone locate Tulloch Forest, the position of the bothy and any names of other Timber Corps ladies who may have worked there?
