Felling Team – Glentress Forest circa 1925

The image is courtesy of Ruth Robertson, Peebles whose father is one of the team.

The men are felling beech trees on Jenny’s Brae (Janet’s Brae near Peebles) around the mid to late 1920s the traditional way with axe and hand saw. The tools appear to be 6-7lb scotch axes and have been used to lay in the tree all round prior to using the double hand saw which is unfortunately not seen in the photograph.

The three men are Kit Glendinning (sitting), Eck Melrose (middle) and George Roberson. Any information on the first two men would be very welcome.
