Oak grafting demo at Dean Forest

A rind graft demonstration of oak in open air. Scions are inserted into cut rootstock. The number depending on the diameter of the rootstock but around one scion to inch diameter. Where ever possible a ‘sap drawer’ branch is left below the graft point to promote healing. The inserted scions are tied in and waxed.

Note the name of photographer (John D Matthews) who later was to become a significant name in forestry. At one point he was head of Genetics in the Forestry Commission and in 1963 took of the position as Chair of Forestry at Aberdeen University where he was originally a forestry student.

Before Aberdeen John Matthews was a student in the Forestry Commission school based at Benmore in Argyll and appeared in one of the class group photos so the year could be identified quite easily.
