Devilla Nursery – heathland extension

Photograph is courtesy and copyright of Forestry Commission, Forest Research, Roslin, and provided with help from Glen Brearley. FR Photo number No A1415 taken by ?

A view of a new experimental heathland extension to Devilla Nusery (Fife) which is small and sheltered by surrounding trees.

The PDF gives a closer view of the ground prepared in autumn 1952 for sowing in spring 1953. To reduce the amount of lighter coloured material soil being brought up the ground was dug over by hand using short bladed spades.
