Ae Village - Celebrating 50 Years

This booklet is courtesy of Lisa Stitt who, as a resident of Ae village, compiled and wrote this beautifully presented little booklet in 1997.

Here special mention must be accorded to Margaret Laurie of Galloway Forest District Office who initially brought to the attention of this website the existence of the booklet and equally to Bill Meadows, former District Manager of Ae Forest District, who was able to contact Lisa and get her permission to place it on Forestry Memories.

The attached PDF (small symbol on bottom right of photo next to green cross) shows the booklet page by page and the various chapters supported by text and photographs are listed below:

1. Preface
2. Introduction
3. Claims to Fame
4. The Residents
5. Gala Day
6. The Village School
7. The Golden Jubilee
8. A Basic History
9. The Village Hall
10. Notable Events
11. S U Robertson – Former District Officer (Can anyone remember his first name?)
12. Who Stayed Where and When

Many of the photographs show the village people when at school or special events and give a beautiful snapshot of the village life of earlier days. The chapter headed A Basic History charts the origins of Ae Village and is again accompanied by some very special images.

The last chapter Who Stayed Where and When can only have been achieved as a result of a great deal of research, reading and copying out lists of names because Lisa has provided for each house the list of all the tenants over the years from 1949 up to 1997. The chapter includes a village map with street names and house numbers.

Special efforts were made to produce an ‘OCR Searchable PDF Document’ but unfortunately it has not worked on this website.

A special invitation is put to former residents and families of former residents to add details and comments onto this website via the Comments Box below. The comments are moderated and only appear later after authorisation. Photographs can also be loaded onto the site - see contact details for the website.
