1953 Storm in Whitehaugh Forest and clear up
This file is courtesy of Forestry Commission office, Huntly.
This decription of the Jan 1953 gale was found among the Whitehaugh Forest papers but the name of the author was not attached - it is possible it may have been written by Mr C Duguid who was Head Forester there in 1952.
There is a graphic description of the effect of the storm on a stand of trees and also the extent of the devastation afterwards.
The third page above is a bit of a mystery as it appears a date is noted as 3/2/69 (do not think it is a file reference?)and may refer to a totally different gale (1968 was the year of a severe gale in West Scotland). It is interesting to see the costs of the felling, crosscutting and haulage as well as the value of the timber products. Note the volumes are generally quoted in Cubic Feet (approx 28 to the Cubic Metre). Can anyone clarify the date, information and foresters names?
