List of failed FC areas in North Scotland

A part of the 1938 Census documents courtesy of Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District showing failed areas in Forestry Commission forests in North Scotland Conservancy.
The five sheets in the attached PDF name the then existing Forestry Commission forests and lists the areas of new plantings to be written off in each. There are some substantial total areas in forests such as Achnashellach and Borgie underlying the pioneering venture on very poor quality ground with initially minimal cultivation. Much of this ground was replanted again with improved afforestation techniques.

Some of the comments are interesting and certainly to the point!
Any explanation of the abbreviations (cfs) and (HID) welcome.

Aye Norman,

Might I suggest that "cfs" is an abbreviation for "conifers", as it appears at the end of the notes in the 'Species' heading columns e.g. "Listed as other cfs."?

As for the "H.l D." in the sentence under the "INCHNACARDOCH" heading in column (5), "In hands of H.l D. (243 acres with 48 acres of expts.)", it appears not to be a capital "I" between the "H." and the "D.", but a lower case "l", without a full stop. The sentence appears to refer to the Lon Mor area and the experiments thereon and maybe, therefore not managed by the Inchnacardoch Forester, or the District Officer based in Inverness. The abbreviation refering to another management group. I have read the Forestry Commission 20th Annual Report for 1938 - 1939 (online pdf from the FC website) and Jim Davidson's review of the Lon Mor experiments (available on Forest Memories as Image No.:3052). In neither of these documents can I find the abbreviation "H.l D.", perhaps Bill Mason might be able to enlighten us?

My regards, Bill Rayner
