Benmore Forestry Students 1944

The photograph is courtesy of Sheena Bell, Dundee, daughter of Arthur M Bell from Northern Ireland who was a student at Benmore believed to be from 1943 to 1945.

The numbers of students indicates that this was the full complement of 1st and 2nd year students. The year is not quite certain but Arthur Bell, identified as No 12, was a gold medal student and is not seated on the bench in this image and thus indicating that this was taken at the end of his first year (June 1944). Arthur Bell only stayed a short time in the forestry before joining the Greenock Police Service in 1948/49 and working his way up the Strathclyde Police ranks in a long career in the service.

Quite a number of students are wearing an oval type badge – can anyone confirm what they represent?

Can anyone add names to the numbers below? See large image from more detail.

The following was received from Bob Boyd (NI):-
No. 21 is Bill Crawford from Northern Ireland, he was a senior forester when I joined the Forest Service in 1960 following my training at Benmore and was a District Officer in later years, sadly he is now deceased.

From the list of student names, of the 4 from Northern Ireland I remember Hugh Conn and W G Anderson (Bill), they both had careers here until retirement some years ago, they are also now deceased. If they are in the photograph I don't recognise them. It is likely that Buchanan and Bell did not return to Northern Ireland to follow a forestry career hence I have never heard of them.
Reference to the Benmore Magazine as illustrated, I have not heard of it, however during my time at Benmore we and previous years students produced an annual magazine called The Slasher.
