Battan Forest - metal name sign

Photograph sent in by Willie Chree of the old style metal forest name plate for Battan Forest, Reelig Section.
The signs appear to have been made from a non rust material possibly a form of aluminium alloy and at one point named every forest in the early days.
Can anyone say when these style of signs first appeared and what preceded them?
More images of these early sign are very welcome.
