Harvesting Altsaigh slopes above Loch Ness

Photograph courtesy of Jim Pratt and photographer Graham Whistler FBIPP FRPS.

The photograph shows Jim Pratt Head Forester (right) in charge of Inchnacardoch Forest harvesting team in 1981 ably assisted by Jim Lyon, Forester, planning the next harvesting section on Altsaigh above Loch Ness. To stop stones rolling onto the A82 they purchased long lengths of heavy duty fishing net and had it set up as a barrier in the forest above the public road. This stopped some of the smaller stones and logs! Because of the large tree size and very steep slopes new bench felling methods had to be developed by Work Study and introduced into the harvesting systems.
All this was in addition to the very extended systems of Cable Crane working, whole tree harvesting and secondary processing of the hauled trees at roadside. Indeed this was very much a pioneering time for the whole harvesting team.
