Uig Nursery - Benmore nr Dunoon Argyll
Photograph courtesy of Pat McAuley.
A view up the transplant beds where the lines of seedling trees have been lined out now in orderly rows in this case 5 rows to a bed with spaces on either side to allow tractors to run over the beds to spray fertilisers, insecticides and also grub up weeds in the days before Simazine a herbiced that very effectively stopped weeds germinating. Up until that time many, many man and lady hours were spent bent over the transplant beds hand weeding. It can be clearly seen in this photograph the effect of rain on the soil limiting severly the use of machinery and encouraging weed growth. By this time most small nurseries had closed, particularly in the higher rainfall areas and the resources concentrated in larger increasingly mechanised units with dryer, free draining soils such as Tullyallan (Fife), Blackstand (Blackisle) and Newton (Moray). It is possible that Uig Nursey was kept open longer than most to give students at Benmore Forester Training School some practical experience.
