Leslie Phillip and David Wood – Tollmuir sawmill

Photograph courtesy of Leslie Phillip, Perth that shows him and his friend David Wood (in front) outside the sawmill at Tollmuir where David worked as a tractor driver delivering logs to the mill.

This site is now occupied by Netherton Tractors Ltd (a John Deere and farm machinery sales group) and sits on the side of the present A90.

Can anyone say who owned the sawmill?

I think the last name of the owner at that time was Miller or to the locals known as Curly Miller. A real mean hard working sawmill.

The information is correct. Curly Miller sold the mill to David Montgomery from Glasgow in the late 1970's. I was the mill manager there until November 1981. I moved from there to be manager of the James Jones mill in Forres.

Campbells of Forestmuir near Forfar was another sawmill with a reputation for hard work in the 1950s and the 1960s. The owner was known locally as Kilty Campbell. The off cut slabs from this sawmill were stacked high outside the gates next to the main road, the advert in the local paper was always slabs free for the uplifting I was surprised the saw miller still had all his fingers as the slabs were mostly bark.

If I remember correctly the sawmill at Campmuir was called Crauchan, on further investigation it appears to still be operating with the building of garden sheds and garages.
