Resurveyed Map of Clunes Forest circa 1965
Maps are courtesy of Lochaber Forest District, Torlundy with particular thanks to Ben Lennon.
First resurvey of the original planting maps of Clunes Forest produced about 1965 as the 1968 and 1970 plantings have been added in by local staff. Unfortunately the full details of species and planting years are only tabulated at the side but someone has added some Planting Years in green on the actual compartments. Compartment numbers are quite hard to spot but are printed on in black.
The earliest planting shown is at the very northern extremity of the forest alongside Loch Lochy in Compartment 1. There must be some reason that the planting did not begin near to the houses at Clunes as the earliest there is about 1934. Did they use boats to travel up the Loch?
Later acquisitions are shown at near the outlet of Loch Arkaig and also northwards up a side valley.
Please open large version to see the map details. Does anyone have any historical information about this forest, forest workers and foresters?
