Helicopter at fire in Culloden wood

The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.

This is a shot of a fire at Culloden Wood being tackled by a PLM helicopter using John Martin designed bucket with drop down hose and fire foam. The follow on shots seem to indicate the bucket was being filled by the fire tender and also having foam added at that point.

Does anyone remember this incident and know how effective or otherwise this fire fighting system was?

This could have been the fire I witnessed from the Aberdeen - Inverness train in 1984. I had just started working at the Forest Industry Centre (now Scottish Shool of Forestry) and was commuting every weekend from Keig, Alford. By the time I got to the site there was great activity for the Fire Brigade, don't recall seeing the helicopter. Fire fire was extinguished just 20 yards from the school. Still see some of the burnt stems on the site now.
