Pete Smith and the Hill Billy

The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.

There was no information other than a name and machine type for this photograph.

Can anyone provide more information on the man, where he worked and the origin of the Hill Billy?

The drive track belt reminds me of the web belts on potato harvesters.?

According to some old literature i've got the 'Hill Billy' was manufactured/distibuted by Hill Billy Manufacturing Co , Shore Road , Tain , Ross-shire. It was driven by a single cylinder air cooled Briggs & Stratton engine and steered by the rear handles with throttle and clutch controls also mounted on them. The tracks were constructed of 12mm square bars fixed at 30mm centres on to two rubber belts giving a track width of 64cm. It also states that the machine could negotiate slopes of up to 30% and that the operator should be cautious of 'kickback' through the steering handles whilst on rough ground ! Rated to carry loads of up to 250kg. Its price new was £395.00 in 1973.
