Bert Legge on County ploughing tractor

Picture courtesy of Ronnie Legge, Roads Foreman Aberdeenshire. Picture of Ronnie's father, Bert, on his Ford County ploughing tractor at Ardonald Moss near Huntly. Bert originally came from Deer Lake, New Foundland and worked with the Commission as a ploughing tractor driver. This tractor had extra wide tracks to cope with the very soft conditions on the Moss which the locals said would never be ploughed and planted as the peat was too deep. Part of the outlet drain dug by hand was over 6 feet deep. Bert was given a BSA 125cc Bantam Motorcyle to get him to his work and often arrived home after a cold wet day on the machine frozen to the bone but he thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of difficult sites. In 2005 Ronnie supervised the construction of the Harvesting road to Ardonald which took away a fine crop of timber!
