Raby Castle students with Cundey Bark Peeler

Photographs are courtesy of John Keenleyside, Forres, who took the photograph.

Students from the 1951 three month course at Raby Castle are examining the work of the new Cundey bark peeler on a piece of short pit wood. Student’s names are not recalled.

John remembers ‘The newly arrived Cundey bark peeler to mechanise the peeling of pit props appeared to be a most lethal machine especially with rough barked pine like Corsican. Students with not a hard hat in sight!’

It was indeed a lethal machine! and hard work, the biggest Props were 8FT x 6 Inch Diameter and they had to be peeled Green.
