Cable crane training - artificial spars
A training course held in Glengarry? for harvesting foresters in the working and management of cable cranes. Hugh Thom and Alec Sandilands were the instructors and it may be Hugh behind the tractor. This shows a cable crane set up with artificial spars (cut poles instead of growing trees). This set up kept the tractor and operator out of the direct line of the hauling operation and allowed stacking on two sides of the road. The skyline comes down the rack from the left and over the top of the anchored spar with its rubber covered anchor strops. The haul in line goes from the tractor drum to a pulley hanging part way down from the top of the spar and from there to the carriage and around the load of pulp that is just about to be landed across the road.
