Cable crane extraction - Glen Nevis
Load of pulp just hauled into skyline and about to be dragged down hill to roadside. Dougie Stansfield, chokerman, out of shot. Easy to see carriage sitting on top of and supported by skyline. Haul in line is around the load, through a pulley on the carriage and down hill to winch where it is wound in on one of the two powered drums. The haul back line is attached to the top end of the carriage, runs up to the top spar tree pulley and then all the way back down to the second powered drum on the winch via a side route. Each drum is independently powered and braked and by powering one and braking the other loads are pulled into the carriage and up or down hill. Winch man usually could not see the load and relied initially on radio instructions from chokerman and then totally on the feel of the strain and reaction of the forces on the winch. I see the remains of a nylon safety strop on the haul back line - it tore part way if forces exceeded wire breaking limits.
